Where Does Clearance Stock Come From?

A common question we get: if these products are genuine, why are they so cheap? Fair question. Nobody sells L'Oreal or Playmobil at 40 percent off out of kindness. Here is where clearance stock really comes from.

1. Pack design changes

Brands refresh their packaging constantly. The moment a new design ships, retailers do not want the old look on their shelves, even though the product inside is identical. That old-packaging stock has to go somewhere, fast and cheap.

2. Cancelled export orders

A retailer abroad orders three truckloads, then cancels or fails a payment. The goods are already manufactured, packed and sitting in a UK warehouse. The supplier needs them gone this week, not this quarter, and price is the lever.

3. Short-dated lines

Products approaching their best before date get cleared early because retailers want long shelf dates. The products are perfectly good, as we explain in our guide to what short-dated means.

4. End-of-line and surplus ranges

Discontinued colours, seasonal overstock, ranges a supermarket delisted. None of it is faulty. It is simply stock the mainstream retail chain no longer has room for.
